Ok, I am a single female who is comletely home-repair retarded. I bought a new doorknob this afternoon. Is this a project I can do on my own or should I wait until I have someone who knows what they are doing? To give you an idea of my skills (or lack of skills!!) I know I need a Phillips screwdriver (and I know what that is), but the instructions talk about a chassis and spindle, and I have no idea what those are.

Ok, all. I'm putting the best answer to a vote. It took me 21/2 hours to replace my door knob....there was one little detail that no one mentioned and that wasn't in the instructions....the detail was on a tiny little sticker on the latch that goes inside the door, and it said "depress before installing locks." The first time I put the lock on, everything was working great, the key would lock and unlock the door, and then I shut the door.....and it wouldn't open. It took me a while and a few beers and a lot of cigarettes to get this done!

The chassis is the body of the lockset. The spindle is the portion of the lockset that you turn with either the key or knob to lock/unlock the set.

If you refer to the illustrations and read the instructions, you should be able to complete the project yourself.
Issues you might encounter are different sizes and orientation of parts, and alignment of components.
If you understand "Righty - tighty, Lefty - loosy", you can handle this, though it may take you a while, and you may wind up reassembling the lock more than once. It isn't "rocket surgery", to paraphrase one of our politicians.

Good Luck

It should be easy enough. Just unscrew the 2 screws on the inside of the door lock by the knob. Now there should be a little tab at the base of the knob that you will need to push in with a flat blade screwdriver. This will release the knob and it should come off. The new door lock should be able to go on now. tighten the new screws up and align the trim plate if necessary. Now you should be able to attach the new knob.

I don't know if I covered everything you need to know, but its not that bad and with the instructions you should figure it out. The main thing is to know how to get the knob off

Good luck, I know you are in a hurry.

---Removing The Old And In With The New
Once you have your new lockset picked out and your door and mortise are ready to go, here’s how to remove the old lock and install the new one:

1. Along the shank or stem of the interior knob is a tiny release. Insert a nail or small screwdriver into the slot to free the knob. Remove the knob’s vanity plate (called the "rose") by simply lifting it off or prying it free if it has been glued down or stuck to the door paint.
2. Remove the mounting plate screws and pull off the plate, then remove the exterior knob and cylinder. Next remove the faceplate and latch on the door and the striker plate on the doorframe (or opposite door).
3. On the exterior side, install the replacement latch assembly. Next install the faceplate. Gently guide the exterior knob and cylinder through the hole until the cylinder engages with the latch assembly.
4. Next attach the interior knob by installing the mounting plate to the protruding cylinder. Install the interior rose and knob and then the new striker plate. Test the latch in the striker plate to make sure the depth and position are right. if any adjustments are needed check here http://www.repair-home.com/Keeping_Latches_and_Locks_Working

Take the old knob out and just watch how it slides apart. Then put the new one in it's easy and most new doorknob instructions are illustrated. Good luck.

if you make a mistake, try again. i have done several, and it is a couple of screws, watch how you take the last one off, and put the new one on the same way, just line everything up

you can do this on your own. the chassis is the part that the lock goes into and the spindle is the long part connected to the handle.
