is it protruding? or is it just a speckle or spot of different coloration than the reat f him?

if it's protruding it's most likely either a tumor (nothing you can do, but sometimes they live perfectly fine with it) or it's constipated (I have had my female bettas get some odd looking lumps in their bellies just from being constipated). try fasting it for a day, then take one frozen pea and soak it in hot water until the water and the pea are room temp. then take the shell off the pea and feed either a few bite sized pieces to yuor betta or drop it in and let him nibble it. take out extra after a few hours. then don't feed him the next day either.

if you don't want to take the chance of it being a tumor and your fish dying you could take it back and exchange it for a different one.

It could be a lot of things. It's not that the fish is pregnant. (Yes live bearers like guppy, molly, platy/swordtails get a black spot when knocked up, but bettas aren't livebearers.) Some betta have black spots. Often these aren't evident in the store as bettas fade in color when stress, and their color improves with clean water, and good food. I had a female who developed the cutest black spots on her fins a 3-5 days after I got her. (Initially scared me too.)

The question is are any of the following true:
1)Is it growing?
2)Is it raised or a different texture?
3)Is it non-symetric? (On only one side of the body like with fins.)

If 1 or 2 it's likely a fungus, or cancer. If 3 it could be the equivalent of a mole, but bears watching for changes.

If it's female it may be pregnant. If it's male that's just weird.
