There are no structures on Mars made by intelligent life forms. The "pyramid" formations you refer to are just natural formations of rock and dust, possibly from ancient volcanoes.

The "monuments" of Mars are not really pyramids or faces, they can appear like that when the lighting is right, but subsequent photos under different lighting conditions did not show any such features.
People are conditioned to recognize familiar patterns. A similar effect is the "Man in the Moon". On occasion, the full moon will appear to have a giant face. It's kind of like the childrens game of finding animals inthe clouds.

Those are all old, low resolution Viking or Mariner images, all now superceded by Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Express or Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter images.
Those "pyramids" are proved to be only tricks of light and perspective on perfectly natural rock formations.

There are no pyramids on Mars. There are hills that are shaped like them though. Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, in conjunction with Mars Express, can clearly resolve such features. It seems to be similar to the "face" on Mars. Mars Express showed it was simply just some eroded hill.

Probably they are simply natural formations; don't forget that mars has an atmosphere then winds, and sandstorms, and probably once there was liquid water too.
