Okay Germany certainly wanted land he even called it "Lebensraum" or living space. Germany would get more food and natural resources. This was there foreign policy. He also wanted to get back territory that Germany lost from WW II, so he invaded Poland September 1,1939 to get back Danzig (Port city on the Baltic Sea) polish corridor.

Hitler had a master plan he called it the "3rd Reich" an empire that would last for a 1,000 years. So yes land and the natural resources plus the food that could be grown all for the cause of this goal.
Germany needed to invade Soviet Union so it could acquire the resources and most land was to the east. The plan was to make the Slavic people the slaves of the Germain Empire as they would work for their Germain masters growing food. Oil was a big factor for Hitler wanted to try to capture Stalingrad. Push into the Central Asian/Caucasus.
Italy under Mussolini wanted to recreate a new Roman Empire. This meant invading Ethiopia (1936) wanted all of Greece, North Africa, basically the master of the Mediterranean Sea. He was weak and Germany became the dominate power betwen the two Axis powers. Sent African Korps (German soldiers-equipment) try to capture Egyp push into the MIddle East for Oil.
Allies wanted to stop Axis in the begiining it was only United Kingdom, France. and the commenwealth nations after Germany invaded Poland.
-September 1939 Stalin and Germany sign a Pact that divides the territory of Poland in two. Stalin gets Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuanis plus a part of Romania in the east.
-June 1940 France surrenders.
-June 1941 Germany (axis allies Italy, Hungary, Romania, Finland, Croatia, and Slovakia) invade Soviet Union. Making Stalin fight on the allies side.

-December 1941 Japan bombs Pearl Hrabor. USA eneters the war.
-MAY 1943 Italy surrenders to the allies, but German forcess invade taking Rome. Italy would be fougt over until the end of war 1945. Many partisans fought agianst the Germans and Italian Fascists still loyal to Mussolini.
-May 1945 Germany surrenders and September 1945 Japan surrenders. Allies demanded unconditional surrender would not stop until this goal was achieved.
Japan is very resource poor no oil or other minerals , so yes Manchuria had resources. Japan seized French Indochina in 1940. America retaliates cuts of all oil and scrap metal. Japan desperatly needs oil and a good source was the Dutch colony in what is today called Indonesia. Japan decided to bomb American naval base pearl harbor in the hope they would cripple us. Thinking America would accept Japan's domination of Pacific Ocean-Asia- Australia.

If you mean WWI, the existing order of Europe came unraveled. It was based on a complex series of alliances and treaties which caused the various European nations to come to the aid of each other. So when a small conflict erupted in the Balkans, every nation in Europe was forced by treaty into defending either one side or the other. I don't think if either side had realized how devastating that war was going to be that it would have started at all. The major players Germany and France were both under the impression that they had the resources to win.

We were attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor!
We were forced into the war as Germany and Italy and in the beginning Russia (until Germany turned on them) were taking over country by country.
I think there were a few incidents at sea where we were attacked.
It was, basically, to keep us free and as a side effect freed many people that were being enslaved.

Germany and Italy, along with Japan if you want to include them the Axis powers, were fighting for land and power. It was all about domination and power, natural resources and riches, of one kind of another.
The Allies were simply fighting to stop the advance of the Axis powers. They wanted to stop Hitler and Hirohito from expanding their countries and armies into other countries. They were fighting to recapture France, to stop the massive killing of Jews, and to protect themselves.

Please remember, when land is fought for it is not the land itself but the resources it provides.
The Japanese took Manchuria not because it was pretty, it contained iron ore. They wanted Indonesia for rubber and petroleum.
Almost the same way Geo. W. likes Iraq.
