For me, where I want to go is always predicated by where I have already been. While I would like to return to places I have been, first and foremost I would prefer to go to places I have never been.
I suggest you start by brainstorming and making a list of places you "think" you would like to visit. Put down the first thoughts that come to your mind. Then, with a list of maybe ten or twelve, research vacation packages and "things to do" at those spots to refine your choices.
I can't recommend a good place to go to you without knowing you. The places I think are neat, you might hate. But another thought is to visit with people you know whose tastes are similar to yours and ask them where they have traveled that they really really enjoyed and would recommend to others.
Finally, cost is an issue for most of us. Think in terms of perhaps getting the Hawaii "experience" by going to Cancun instead......probably for half the money (for example).

Yosemite CA is a must see if you like the outdoors and nature. If you're coming in the Summer there are great campsites reasonably priced as well as several hotels and lodges in the park.
San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego CA are all good places if you want city life combined with the beach. But be aware San Francisco is cold most of the time.
Las Vegas NV is awesome for night clubs, Casinos and shows.
Beyond that the U.S. is a huge country and each state has it's own hidden gems that is why there is no website to highlight what to do in the U.S.
Pick a state and then search from there you will get more info that way.

Depends on what you'd like to do?
Big Cities, nightlife, plays, theater, nightclubs? Most major cities have such, the best known and variety would be New York City and Chicago
Long sandy Beaches, resorts, taking it easy? Try the Florida Gulf Coast with Alabama (Gulf Shores). How about Texas' Padre Island coastline. If you have transportation, you could go for the Great Lakes Shorelines along Michigans, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron Shores, (Lake Huron is less crowded, but harder to get to).
Mountains: alpine, tundra, rock climbing? Rocky Mountain NP (Denver) or Glacier National Park outside Kalispell, Montana.
Canyon Country, Southern Utah and SW Colorado.
There are a lot of other interesting and fun places, depending on what you call fun. How about a Covered Bridge tour? Or visiting the Amish communities in Ohio or Indiana. A month living in a lighthouse in the Apostle Islands (Wisconsin)? Geologic wonders of Yellowstone Nat'l Park, Crater Lakes NP, Olympic NP, Yosemite NP, Grand Canyon NP? Native American Communities (Hopi Reservation, Navajo Reservations, Arizona? Hispanic culture in Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Albuqueque, San Antonio? Great American Museum of the Smithsonian (17 separate parts) in Washington DC?
