Convention. Also, to add humanity to a most inhumane action.

The needles are purchased sterilized but why they swab the guy's arm with alcohol is a more reasonable question.

Why do they afford him a last meal?
Why do they afford the person a clean shirt and shower?
Why do they afford him any last words?

It's all an attempt to provide the person with some sense of dignity, usually dignity he doesn't even deserve owing to the crime that most likely landed him in this spot to begin with.

Mercy and dignity--- Ultimately this is all so the person(s) initiating the sentence and the actual killing don't have to feel quite so bad about what they did. After all, they were "nice about how they killed him." Right?

This question has been asked before and my answer remains the same, "It is out of force of habit that they sterilize the needle of lethal injection."

There was a comic about this, an executioner had a sign that said "watch your step" and he's saying "I know, but you try explaining the real world to legal."

Point is as well, if the person dies and is declared such and comes back to life, they are set free as they have served their sentence. If they then have an infection, the prison is liable.

More seriously though, it's just common medical practice in the developed world, we're not in the stone age after all.

They don't. The needes they use are needles used for other medical applications and therefore, are sterilised on manufacture.

Did you ask why they use an alcohol swab to sanitise the arm first last week also lol?

THese supplies are not very scarce, so I'm sure its more economical to actually go with the sterlized needle.
Also I'm sure the practitioners like to maintain protocal for giving injections.

Well, I would think that it would be hard to order dirty needles from the medical supply house... Besides, they often stop it at the last second.
