....Of a union...?
If you work at a great place... great salary, great people (majority), good staff/employer relations... reasonable, flexible..

I'm not saying all unions are crap... some places should have them...
But why pay the fees... and ruin the current congenial relationship between HR/Mgt and staff...
Sorry this question is so serious... I'm just pissed.

Not a fan of unions.
If I remember correctly, ye be a sexy from the North, so I am not at all current on the mindset of unions or labor in Canada.
At one time, unions protected people from unjust or unfair labor practices put on them by selfish employers.
Now they *unions* (IMO) allow lazy people to keep their jobs, force company's to hire & promote people who are not the best choice & extort money from the people they allegedly are supposed to help.
I believe people should be paid on their production & merit and be promoted the same way.
Unions & government are the reason I started my own business.

You would be surprised what companies can get away with, especially now that there are all the Free Trade agreements, and all the outsourcing of jobs. I am happy for you, that you work at a great place, etc. but I don't think most people do! I would love to be in a union, and I would be more than happy to pay the dues, because I know how things can be without unions, in many places, and I would not take it for granted like I have heard that some people do. *sm*

Unions are good... if you work in a coal mine in the 20's. Today, you don't need one. Labour laws, human rights and anti-discrimination laws over rule what any union can do. I used to work for a company that was very open minded. Good pay, understanding management, excellent communication to and from all levels, two weeks vacation to start, amazing benefits, full health care and dental. Many companies are better to work in without a union than those that do have a union. If you want to pay someone to do nothing for you and end up screwing you over, pay me instead.

Some idiots are trying to bring the Union in where my husband works because they want to get paid for the minute it takes at the end of the day to rinse off their work station. It's a joke and my husband's refusing to have anything to do with it. The threat of a union winds up getting more people fired than it does protecting them in some cases.

The first time I knew about unions was when I was 15, and worked part time at the grocery store. I think I made like $4.50 an hour. i was on break, and this guy sitting in the breakroom starts talking about unions and how great they are. i was like OK, I work 20 hours a week, for a little money. This is not my career, and I don't need anyone to protect me. He said 'well, it isn't voluntary, it is mandatory for you to join and pay dues.' I looked at him in disbelief, finished my day, and put my notice in. Nobody tells me that I have to hand them over my money! Except the government...;)
BTW, this guy was the union rep. Go figure...

I remember at my first job, Safeway, I was literally stalked every day until I joined. She just wouldn't stop.
Labor laws and restrictions are in a great enough supply that I just don't see the need for unions, other than maybe to encourage a "team-player" type of attitude among the employees. I don't know. I just know that I wouldn't be interested...
Why mess with a good thing? ♥

I don't like unions but then again I don't understand the reason for them. I wouldn't want to strike just because the union did..this is my life and I don't need a union telling me when and why I can or can not work

I'm not crazy about unions, but there's some place that do benefit, but if the company/business/university is already successful, then no way, it's pointless, if the majority of the employess don't want it, why force it

Union's were created to protect workers from horrible abuse IN THE PAST now a union can SOMETIMES allow the worker to abuse their company. Resonable and flexible are usually out the door...
