This is a statement made by the Midwife Ina May Gaskin, in my view, the most revolutionary of all Revolutionaries, in her latest book Ina May Guide to Childbirth. Please do not attempt to answer unless you have something to contribute, albeit your own founded thoughts. Thank you.

I am not really sure how having an Episiotomy has to do with politicaly views. I do know that it is not something that I would recommed to anyone at all! The healing process depending on the incision, can be rather painfull. I believe that letting nature do its own thing and allowing the body to do what it is meant to natually do, is much easier on a woman. I think that doctors prefer to perform this procedure because it is easier for them to repair than a normal tear is.

I think the contemporary image of a fashion model stems from mysogyny, but this seems a bit over-the-top. I'm pretty sure the idea is that a controlled incision heals better than a tear. Now, she probably would suggest that proper manipulation of the vaginal opening by the attendant can prevent tearing and perhaps she has empirical evidence to support that claim, seeing as she's a midwife, and that socio-political forces prevent the proper education of physicians and other birthing specialists in this aspect of delivery. So, she may have a valid point. But, I'd like to see her empirical data, first, before I decide she's not just being paranoid.

Sounds like the same people who make the same statement about circumcision.

Doctor and patient make the decision; keep "Midwives" and "Politicians" out of the delivery room.
