August originally had 29 days in the Roman Republican calendar, but two days were added to it by Julius Caesar beginning 45 BC giving it its modern total of 31 days. Augustus did not take a day from February when Sextilis was renamed in his honor.

Yes that's exactly the reason. Augustus took a day from February and added it to August. The month had only 30 days in the beginning.

If you make a fist and count the months starting with your forefinger knuckle being Jan and the inbetween being Feb then your middle finger knuckle is March and so forth - your pinky knuckle will be July, but you have to start over which makes your forefinger knuckle August. All the knuckles are months that have 31 days, all the inbetweens don't...DUH!

The reason that august has 31 days is because it is the change in the seasons. About september 1st is when the weather starts to cool. August was just named after Julious Ceasar.
