John Steinbeck

I would assume by this that you mean the BEST and not just the most popular writer. Steinbeck's ability to describe a scene, to make comments on political situations and to craft a plot and conflict between the characters.

His "Grapes of Wrath" though long is THE classic book of American literature, yet he has short stories that are remarkable. The real key to him, however, or at lest for me, is that he is willing to make political commentary or social commentary. "Travels with Charlie" and "To a God Unknown" are good novels that represent this. "The Pearl" is a short story which indicates issues of race, class and gender.

Steinbeck is terrific!

Oooh, that's difficult. Right now I think I'm going to say Salman Rushdie because he's brave with his literature. He's daring and he literally risks his life for his art.

Either him or maybe John Steinbeck. Really anyone who promotes social change and understanding and really makes a stand whilest producing amazing literature. I have high standards.
