Go to http://www.score.org/ to find the nearest SCORE chapter. In the upper left hand corner is a box to enter your zip code. Your nearest SCORE chapter will be on the next screen. Contact them to arrange for a free one on one meeting with a SCORE counselor about opening an internet cafe.

SCORE is a nonprofit organization. They provide a public service by offering small business advice and training.

SCORE's 10,500 volunteers have more than 600 business skills. Volunteers share their wisdom and lessons learned in business. The volunteers are working/retired business owners, executives and corporate leaders.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Start and Run a Coffee Bar by Tom Matzen, Marybeth Harrison
* How to Open a Financially Successful Coffee, Espresso & Tea Shop by Elizabeth Godsmark
* ESPRESSO! Starting and Running Your Own Specialty Coffee Business by Joe Monaghan

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Beware that Philadelphia is not the most business-friendly city, especially for the small business owner.

You will be faced with the issues of obtaining licenses and permits to open for business, and a heavy tax burden in the form of business income tax and business gross receipts tax.

You will also face a challenge in terms of location. There are some parts of the city that are good to business in, but many more that are not.

It's hard enough to start a new business as it is, but the hurdles you will face in Philly will be a little higher than most other places. Best of luck!
