What is the point of children having a cell phone? We as a country made to 250 million before cell phones, why do kids of all people need them. I for one think it leads to a less responsible person. WHy should a kid have to decide whether or not to do something they may or may not get in trouble for if a person is available at the touch of button to get them out of trouble. They dont have to make decisions on their own anymore. Its bad. It s a lazy factor on the parent also. They dont have to take the time to teach their children, they can just tell them what to do over the phone when the time comes.

I do... If I ever have children, NO way in world I would let them have a cell phone. If they get a job and pay for it, oh well fine with me. But I will not pay for their bills!
I've never own a cell phone and perfer it that way. Anyone who claim it's for safety should be shoot off. What's wrong with going into store or some similar places and ask the worker to call? I've done that a couple time and always work just fine. So whole "emergency" stuff is just a load of crap.

I originally thought as you do, however my 12 and 14 yr old grandsons have prepaid cell phones. They have come in very handy as they can call in case of urgency/emergency. And yes, kids DO go outside and in today's world [even in one's own neighborhood] a child can potentially be in danger. BTW, cells have been used by captured kids to help rescuers 'track' them [by leaving the cell 'open']
In the days when public/pay phones were plentiful, cells were not really needed as much - however, even at the rec center where my grandsons play competitive hockey and soccer, there are no pay phones. If they have been taken there by another parent who for some reason cannot bring them home or the game is cancelled or whatever, they can immediately call their mom.
My daughter allows 'social' calls ONLY on weekends and then for pre-determined amounts of time.

Cells Phones are a waste of f**king time. I dont need one because I don't wanna be found. It is a joy not having a cell phone. I'd rather bedoing something productive then be texting. People these days are FOOLS!! Someone better release a Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) over the US and other major countries to rid the world of this flilth we call technology.

This is for all the people answering before me [ What the hell did people do before cell phones ]....
My kids grew up without them and I knew where they where all the time.
You people live in an age where everything is handed to you on a platter.
I am 70 years old and I have survived without a Cell Phone a CB in my car. Grow up and get rid of the damn things. They cause more car accidents then us Seniors do.
Morons are what I call people with cell phones.

for the most part i do. but there are phones where the parent can pre-program a select list of numbers for emergency use only. there are also cell phones with a GPS feature that can locate your child and with all the bizarre things that happen today it may give some reassurance to worried parents.
i'm 39 and i don't have one because i see no need for it in my lifestyle but i recently got one for my parents for previously mentioned reasons. most importantly safety.

I think the only exception is one a child can keep in a bookbag to be reached by a parent, and maybe be given short calling privileges for good behavior, good grades, a clean room, etc. on weekends as a reward. No other exceptions, not until the "child" is old enough to get a job and pay his/her own cell phone bill.

it depends on what they're using it for. i think it's good for whenever the child is at school or other activities and needs the phone for emergencies, etc...
the part about the kids holding onto cell phones 24/7, for social purposes... now that's ridiculous.
