Scientists can tell you what will happen to your body. And you don't need even to be a scientist to know that, your body will either be burnt to ashes or it will be eaten by worms and moulder away, depending of the way you are buried. But I suppose you are more interested in the question what happens to your mind, your consciousness and thoughts, your personality. Many can tell you what they believe will happen, but nobody can scientifically tell you what will happen. Personally I am a Christian and want to find the answer in the Bible. The Bible calls death a sleep, from which we will one day wake up when Jesus comes back as he has promised. I really trust this will happen and am looking forward to that day. To me this is the truth. But you should study this yourself. And another thing the Bible tells is that the dead do not know anything. There is nothing like an immortal soul or an immortal spirit.

I read all the answers and I think they are all wrong. The simple truth is no one knows what happens after we die as no one has ever come back to tell about it. There is no disgrace in admitting one does not know but there is a lot of shame in believing and saying you do know and influencing people's false beliefs.

Peace and love!

Depending on the circumstances of your life and death, you might hang around the earth plane for a while due to emotional attachments or strong emotion. You will likely get a chance to look at your life from the perspective of a movie and see what you think of yourself and the things you did and didn't do.
You'll then get another opportunity to be born again and maybe improve some of the things that you weren't satisfied with last time.
Eventually you'll enter the womb of another mother and be born again, forgeting everything from the past, ready to give it another go and hopefully achieve what you failed to accomplish for yourself last time.

If the Christian view of reality is true and your faith is in the substitutionary death of Jesus in your place then you are heaven bound, you will be greeted with personal warmth and welcome and all will know your name. You will always be remembered for the good things you have done and all the bad is erased and forgotten because Jesus erased it. There is food, wardrobe, and no more sorrow, death, or suffering.
If it is true and you reject it then you will be quarantined in hell which is a place where those who reject God are happier. In this system your soul is eternal.

If the monistic views of reality are true then nothing will happen to you and you will be a faded memory to few or return to the impersonal essence of the universe. In this system your soul is temporal.

Think about it this way- we dont understand what "nothing" is because it is impossible for us to perceive. Therefore, when I say "nothing" happens when you die, I mean some sort of state of non-existence that we cant understand. So the short answer is, you wont know until you get there.

After you die, there will be no more you, so nothing will happen to you.

YOU will move on to the next stage of your existance. Your body will remain here and eventually revert back into part of the natural world.

utter death and annihilation await you, you can delude yourself, however, in order to cushion the blow, believe in an afterlife....afterall, 80% of the world's population has this distorted worldview, you may as well join the party.

Myself, i'll stick with Objective Reality.
