Hi recently I have been very disgusted by news from around the country regarding the horrific abuse of children. I want to do something to make a change. I have forwarded the folllowing websites to all my friends and family. http://www.familywatchdog.us
and http://meganslaw.ca.gov/
But I want to know what else can I do? If I were to print out newsletters and mail them or post them could I get in trouble? I know that sex offenders have to register, and are not supposed to be harrassed, so what are the guidelines how can I inform the community? (Without breaking the law?)

I am asking because there are over 70 offenders in my community. It is so scary knowing that some of these people live right next to schools.

I too feel this way about the treatment of children in this country. Knowing that you have that many offenders in your area is horrifying! I understand that they have their rights as well, and are not to be harassed. Maybe you could pass out fliers that just remind people to be careful, because we never know who is standing beside us? You know, never say the names of these people, but urge others to go on-line and look up local sex offenders. It is public information.

Another idea, maybe start a support group in your area, for those who need it. Because as sad as it is, its usually the victims that get harassed after all is said and done.

Do you know what qualifies as a sex offense that requires registration? Before you go nuts putting out newletters be sure you know that anyone is even at risk and that you are not just screwing up the living arrangements for someone who's "offense" has nothing to do with the safety of the neighborood.
Peeing on the side of a road and getting spotted by a child can get you a sex offender registry, statuatory rape can get you a registry - there are more than pedophiles on that list.

You have to understand that just because a person is on a sex offenders list it does not mean they actually had sex with an underage person, or even saw an underage person. They could have gone into a chat room and chatted with an police officer posing as an underage child and chatted about sex. That is cause to become a felon, go to prison and to be put on the list. Or you could have turned 18 and continued to have sex with a girl under 18 and that would do you in too.

Don't get all bent out of shape. The list is available to anyone who cares to view it. It is not your duty to put up posters. How would you like it if I told all your neighbors you were f-ing a married man and got pregnant with out being married. Oh I'm sorry you were misled... just like some of those people on the sex offenders list. Oh my! Do you see how "things happen" and your not really a bad person?
