My doctor just called me this morning telling me it came back abnormal and that I have to go back in again. I am a little worried, I have been getting my paps since I was 18 never had a problem, now I'm 26. Help!
If you had a abnormal pap what would you do in my situation to stay calm.

I had an abnormal pap! Hey you are going to be fine. Sometimes it doesn't mean anything. Actually it doesn't mean anything more often than it does. And if you have had regular Pap's since you were 18 then the likelihood of it being something scary is really low. It could be mild dysplasia, which can be taken care of. You don't get cervical cancer overnight.

I had mild dysplasia and it was taken care of. And I have been healthy ever since. It's normal.

I had an abnormal pap last year. Turns out I had HPV, the kind that causes cervical cancer. I freaked out. I cried the whole way home. By the time I got home I calmed down, I researched it on-line. I had to go back and have cryo surgery (not as bad as I expected). I then had to return like 2 months later to make sure that they got it all. That smear came back ok. Now that I had a normal one I still have to go back every 4 months for the next 2 years to make sure everything stays ok. Don't freak out just yet though. Pap smears can come back "abnormal" for several different reasons. The sample could have just been contaminated or you could be getting a yeast infection. Take a deep breath and just be thankful that you go on a regular basis and if there is anything wrong they have probably caught it in time. Best wishes, Good Luck!!

I had one about 15 years ago. I know it worries you because you have to wait to go back to the doctor to find out what it is. It could be something as minor as the lab just couldn't read the sample. With me, I had pre-cancerous cells on my cervix. A biopsy was done, just to be sure. The tissue was benign, but the bad cells needed to be destroyed to assure they wouldn't develop into cancer.

At that time, there were two procedures. One involved cutting out part of the cervix. I was told that is what my doctor preferred and I said no way, I am getting a second opinion. Sure enough, I found a doctor that used a procedure of freezing the cells. After that I had to have paps every 6 months for 2 years. Then back to the once a year schedule. Have been fine ever since.

Don't get yourself worked up. Stay calm, it could be ANYTHING. Abnormal doesn't necessarily mean bad.

I have had 2 in my lifetime and almost every woman will have an abnormal pap at one point in her life. To stay calm think of what I just typed that almost every woman has an abnormal pap at least once in their lifetime. Since not all there women have cancer that should tell you that it is not always serious. My last abnormal was do to a severe cervix inflammation which responded to creams. My first one was long ago and I had an idiot doc back then so I can't tell you more on that one as she froze my cervix without ever sending me to be evaluated by a GYN.

i had my first abnormal pap two months ago. i was frantic. please do go for the follow up exam. turned out i had dysplasia, precancerous cells caused by HPV. none of which i would have known i had. i am a frantic person, and have had to take this day by day. still dont know the result as to wether or not all my bad cells were removed. it is of utmost importance that you follow up with this. tell your ob that you want to have an appt asap, so he can explain this. it may be nothing at all.
