How can you be certain as possible that a piece is real and not just a forged piece of junk? That a seller is honest?

Ask the seller for a certificate of authenticity. Buy only from reputable dealers listed on Ebay. Check online for their BBB status. If you are buying direct from the artist ask for a statment from the certifying they are the artist with the name, title, and date of the artwork. I am an artist and buying through Ebay can make it difficult to verify but it can be done. I try to make unique notations on each piece of art and do not publicize what that may be. I will leave information on how to verify my work for when I am dead and gone. Provided there is that much interest in my work :)

You can't unless it comes with a certificate of authenticity. You can check the seller's history by reading what others wrote about him/her. Look under "Feedback" and read the comments. Also check their feedback rating. The higher the number, the better. It means that they've had the same ebay account for a long time. Scammers will usually open new ebay accounts after they have ripped a few people off. But their feedback number will usually be below 10.

If the item is "not as described" you can open a dispute and get your money back, however this only really works if the seller is validated. Check their status. If they are a validated seller, that means they have their bank, credit card information on file, and if you win a dispute, the money immediately gets sent to you.

I sell my art on Ebay-I provide a full bio and a certificate of Authenticity thru the National Fine Artists Registry with every painting-not just one I printed on the computer. But then again, I've been selling and also painting decorative art for 30 years-its my living and my reputation on the line in my opinion and as far as Ebay goes of course I'm 100% on feedback. If you actually have a particular art piece in mind and are satisfied with the feedback etc, you could actually go to a recent buyer feedback from this seller and send a question to the buyer and see if they were happy etc with their purchase-so you get a personal answer....just a thought! PS- my user name is ghostinjungle-nothings up right now but you can see my work on my "about me" page. I'm working on a show so my Ebay pieces are slow....Have Fun!

Assume that it's forged, and bid accordingly.

Sorry, bud, I think that something that looks as good as a Van Gogh should be priced the same as a Van Gogh, and vice versa. I guess that makes me not an art collector. I also make my own cheese toast and don't see the point in bidding on someone else's even if hers has an image that she claims is the Virgin Mary.
