In the UK, you never owe your employer maternity pay that they give you. Unless you had a particular agreement with them that they would give you extra maternity pay in return for you agreeing to go back. That would be clearly stated in a seperate contract.
If you are just getting your Stat maternity pay, it is not re-payable, even if you decide not to go back to work. You are paid for the maximum time off (39 weeks) and then after that time you don't have to return to work, and you can keep that money. The purpose of the money is for you to support yourself and your child while you are not working - that's how benefits work. Maternity pay is essentially a government benefit that is paid to you directly by your employer, who then re-claims it from the government. It is not a bribe or a bond to force you to return their employment.

Check with your employer our firm makes you pay back a percentage if you do not return to work for a certain amount of time after maternity leave and I work in a big firm so I would think if they can do it then a lot of other firms will also have this

I had to go back to work for two weeks after having my daughter. This wasn't to pay back the maternity leave, it was because if I went ahead and quit, I would of had to pay for some of the medical bills. Our company's health insurance didn't pay off all the bills until I went back to work for two weeks..... Good Luck

tough question. I wouldn't think you would legally be required to repay amounts already paid. You might want to for ethical reasons, but I wouldn't. Unfortunately, it's kind of a cost of doing business for employers and something most employers expect. Once you are sure you want to quit, give notice as soon as possible. You may want to check out the official site for family leave laws (FMLA):

I do not believe you owe them maternity pay they have already paid you, it was a decision that was made after the fact. You should tell them as soon as you have made the decision though.

You don't have to pay them back I don't think. Just tell them as soon as you know and work it out with your employer.

At any point. You have to return for 12 weeks before they will consider the debt repaid.

Different companies have different policies, I know that where I used to work, you had to come back for at least one day, otherwise you would have to pay them back. My suggestion would be to contact your HR rep and ask them
