Censorship has had very little affect in limiting the spread of ideas, ultimately. It can limit ideas temporarily, but not over a huge period of time.

The French at one time just attempted to kill everyone who followed their one idea (the group did not believe that priests held any special place within religion and the Bible) ... it worked, although it was rather harsh.

As for salons, it's all about people talking. It's sort of like the beauty parlor of today, or the lunch room, or people who stand around the water cooler, or perhaps even talk radio.
