Poisonous gases were first used in a German offensive against Ypres in 1915. This was simple chlorine (CL).

More sophisticated gases were developed and used by both sides in that war, but, as both had developed gas masks, no other gas attack had the same effect. It might be mentioned that gas attacks on a static front are dependent upon weather, and neither side could really be sure from whence the wind would blow.

It should be noted that neither side in either war used gas as a weapon in WWII, though most soldiers were required to carry gasmasks.

After WWII gas has largely been a weapon against civilian populations.

" (Have)chemical warfare been practiced in other modern wars besides WWI? "

Americans shipped chemical shells to Italy during WWII (although they were probably not used) and employed chemical agents in Vietnam.
