I think if they were really worried, they'd be discussing post-birth strategies with her. My son was quite small at 3 weeks early (6lb. 3 oz, and left the hospital at under 6lb), but they still let him come home with me. A baby's size can double in the first few months, especially if the Mom breast feeds, so don't be too concerned. If I were your friend, though, I'd call the OB/GYN and ask them to clarify their concerns. She shouldn't be embarassed about "bothering" them, either, because that's why they get paid the big bucks!

They need to explain further. The 20th percentile is based on a 1 to 100 percent scale. My kids have always been big 95th percentile. But if it was from an ultra sound they can be wrong sometimes. They said my first daughter had edima (swelling of the skin) from her ultra sound when she was born there was absolutely nothing wrong with her. My youngest they guessed at 10 to 11 pounds and she was 8, she just had a big head and they use the head measurement to guess the wieght.

They will do another ultrasound in a week or 2, to make sure the baby is still growing. That is the main concern, and as long as they baby is still growing it is ok. If the baby is not growing at the same rate it should, she will have the baby early. I had the same problem, and they just monitored it, the baby ened up going all the way, and was 7,4, so until she talks to the doctor, she should try not to worry (easier said then done!)

High rate of stillborn deaths or other complications when the baby stops growing at a certain age. Don't worry just wait to talk to dr and give her what ever support she needs and it maybe nothing just the person that took the ultrasound screwing up. Unless there are other concerns they should have kept there mouths shut instead of trying to scare her. It may be nothing just stay calm and wait it out. It is hard.

I measured small throughout my entire pregnancy and my daughter was born in the 15 percentile. She gained weight immediately and is now in the 75 percentile. I would not worry to much. My daughter was small because of the shape of my uterus. She is perfectly healthy. Good luck to your friend and I hope this helps to reassure her somewhat.

A baby gains most of it's baby fat in the last two weeks in utero. I would not be concerned as of yet.

when they say 20th percentile that means the baby is bigger than 20% of babies in the same age group. so that means 80% would be bigger so she seams to be small. she needs to talk to her Dr. though,. maybe the baby is healthy but just small
good luck
