They sure can. Bettas are quite peaceful fish that make a good addition to a community tank. The things to avoid are 1) other bettas 2) fin nipping fish 3) aggressive fish. As long as you keep your betta with other fish that won't hurt him or his long fins you'll be fine. Most tetras, danios and rasboras make good tank mates for bettas, but be sure to check out each type of fish before you add it to a tank. That's always a good idea in any situation.

I have a male Betta and he is a little territorial with the tank, but what I've noticed is that he is aggressive with the guppies because of their tails, whether it's the size of color I'm not sure.
But I also have have a couple of neon tetras in there and they can out swim him if need be, but I've never seen him chasing them around the tank.
I also have an albino catfish in there that pretty much body slams into the other fish, and the Betta has no interest in him.
I also have the small type of sucker fish and 2 dwarf frogs in there with him and he's cool with them.
I think it all depends on the Betta's personality. Maybe try a couple of fish at a time to see which ones he will accept.

Betta's can live in an aquarium with other fish; however the tank would have to be atleast a 20 gallon bare min. so that all the fish have there own space. Any aggresive fish are BAD to put in with a betta that includes goldfish so if you plan on doing this choose wisely and start with a betta you are not attached to emotionally for practice.

Femlaes can live in a tank with other fish no problem.

dont put a male and a female betta in a tank together with other fish.

however, Males can live with some other breeds if there are no female bettas. Obviously other agressive breeds are no good.
I had no problem putting my male betta in with other breeds that did not look like or were shaped like bettas. I think he thought some other breeds were bettas too and got aggressive.

Just pick some other non-aggressive breeds and try it out.

just for your info - bettas have a lifespan of around 8-10 years.. they usually die because they are stuck in tiny tanks with no heating. they need space, and they need water temp to be between 26-29 degrees celcius (75-84°F).
They come from southeast asia where the water temp is very warm.

Betta's are a great addition to a community tank. I have a 30 gallon tank with glofish, neon's, a few tetras and a large angelfish. The angel and the betta for some reason have a great friendship going they stay together all day and seem to be the best of friends.

I've had bettas for quite a while...
Female bettas can get along with other fish...even with other female bettas. It's the males that need to be alone. I've read some sites that say that the male will be fine with an algae eater. However, I did not have much luck with this. I left the algae eater in the bag, floating in the tank for about 2 hours before I put him in with my betta. They seemed fine while he was in the bag. The betta ignored him completely.

However, as soon as I actually put him in the water, the male betta tried to visciously attack him. I removed him immediately.

So to recap..
Female bettas? Yep...pretty much anything that will not try to eat their fins.
Male bettas? Nothing...they are solitary fish and need to remain that way. At least that's my experience with them.

I would normally say yes you can have a community tank with a betta, however I have a feeder tank, 20gal, for my lionfish. All that I have in there are feeder guppies and I thought that it would be nice to put my betta in there. Bad idea. He hurriedly attacked the guppies and ATE one! I don't know if my betta is especially viscious or if it's all of the males. You just have to find out on your own.

yes, make sure they are with no aggressive tankmates, and no other tank mates with long flowing fins or the betta will think it is another one and fight with it.
no really small fish either the betta can be nippy
no other male bettas, a male can be kept in a large enough tank with female bettas, but male bettas cant be kept together.

I would say no; every time i've seen one, it's always in the bowl alone. I asked the pet store why and they told me they will fight til the death with any other fish. OR If you have a large tank; you can always install a partition to keep them from getting to the other fish.

Bettas can coexist with others (except gouramis and fishes with flashy fins like guppies). Check out this yahoo group. It will give you a good clear idea what you can use. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/novice_aquariums/
