I'm in my first year at med school, and loving it.
I would recommend keeping up to date with any health related issues in the media at the moment. The BBC news website is usually good for this. I would make youself aware of 'Modernising Medical Careers', and all the problems with it at the moment - if you search into a search engine something will come up.
Something like New Scientist is probably a good idea to read on a regular basis as well.
If you can, try and get hold of copies of the BMJ or student BJM, again, just to get a good idea of what current issues are in the media.
Its also a very good idea - and I mean a VERY good idea to read up on the course you are applying for - especially if you are going to be interviewed. For example, the medical school I'm in, teach by way of PBL, and I was grilled big time about the process of PBL in my interview.
If you mention anything in your personal statement, be prepared to talk about it in depth - be confident about what you know. If you mention an area of special interest - make sure you are genuinely interested - they WILL be able to tell if you aren't - remember the people that are interviewing are usually some of the most well educated in the county.
Finally, I would just say to make sure that you read about the different med schools - they are all very different, and work out exaclty what you want. If you want to live close to home, don't apply to uni's far away, you won't be at your happiest.
Good luck!
