Some are, some are not. It seems to depend on the type of carnival (better-known compared to rinky-dink set-ups). I am friends with a married couple who are raising 2 children in a traveling carnival environment. They are about as normal as normal can be. The main thing different about them is that they love the traveling and adventures and don't want to settle down in one place where they can get too bored. Though they are not related in any way to any of the other "carnies" they travel with, they are like one big family with all the usual dramas that unfold in any big families. They homeschool their children (with accredited curriculum so their children will truly get a quality education).
I also know a couple of "carnies" who claim that their sole purpose in working for a carnival is to see and get all the "freebies" they can. What they mean by seeing freebies is all the flashes they get when a skirt flies up or a top drops too low. What they mean by getting freebies is what others mean by getting lucky. They don't care what the woman looks like at all, nor whether she looks clean or filthy.
These two examples show that there are "normal" and "crazy" carnies. I would like to expand this to say that on just about any job you will find both types of people. However, with some professions, like carnival travelers, the proportion varies and there are a lot more "crazies" than "norms".

Of course...wild games, wild rides, wild people and wild times if you get mixed up with the people who run the carnivals....ask my step-daughter...she is the queen of carnival. lol just joking around.

Extreme low life, dirty, stinky, druggie's, boozer's, real loosers. I hate when they come to town in the Spring & you see all of the trashy people that work with them.
