Fairly standard side-scrolling shooter, the unique feature was the main weapon fired from a rotatable turret, controlled by one button. The main weapon could be "charged-up" like R-Type, and could also be upgraded by picking up bonuses.

Weapons included a slow "hammer" which blocked enemy fire, but had a weak ranged attack. A "laser" which projected a beam, a 3-way shot that charged up to fire a buzzsaw. There may have been other weapons.

Any ideas? I played it in the arcade in Butlins at Skegness about 13-15 years ago, and haven't seen it, or anything similar since.

Nah, not Forgotten Worlds, you controlled a spaceship. Not a bad game, when I played it on my Spectrum.

More like R-Type with the Force bolted onto a pole, which can be rotated 360 around the ship. Thanks for trying.

Thanks for trying but I've played all the R-type games, and it's not one of them.

I believe your game is called Forgotten Worlds. Two players, one red, one blue...kind of floating around in space. Their guns rotated around them similarly to the way you explained it.

Hope this is what you're looking for...it happens to be a great game!
