We are thinking of taking our son to Gilroy for the weekend of the Garlic Festival. It's a long drive for us-about seven hours. Is it worth it??? I'm excited to hear your experience with it. I saw it on TV and it sounds like a ton of fun.

YES... Gourmet Alley is worth the seven hour trip alone. Gourmet Alley is where you buy all the best food at the Garlic Festival! Pepper steak sandwiches, pesto, scampi, stuffed mushrooms..... YUM. Go with an empty belly. And you have to try the garlic ice cream (which is free). If you try it in the morning you taste the garlic, but if try it again in the afternoon you won't taste the garlic at all, because by then you eaten so much garlic.

You don't need the whole weekend though. 1 day would suffice then spend another in Monterey or San Francisco or another fun local place.

From a real live Gilroy-an....absolutely! Yeah, 7 hours is a long drive, but if you enjoy a really happenin' festival with awesome stuff to buy, great music and to die for food, then this needs to be on your must visit list! Prepare for dirty feet and a high probability of a sunburn, though. Friday is the day that most locals go to avoid the "crowds", but ShaBoom plays a free show @ the ampitheater on Sat./ Sun. and they are sooo worth seeing. If you have children, the festival has a really great kids area also! You will need to arrange a place to stay, if you haven't already, as reservations are often made a year in advance. If you want more info, feel free to shoot me a note :)

If you REALLY like garlic it's totally worth is. Make sure you bring some extra spending money and visit the outlet stores as well Gilroy has one of the biggest outlet malls in CA. Garlic Ice cream is an acquired taste but you should taste it at least once they have free samples there of it. Bring some breath mints because you will smell when you leave after eating all the yummy garlic food.

If you like garlic, crowds and just a good time then it's worth it. With the cost of gasoline, 7 hrs. is a lot of driving and gas.. You only live once. If you can afford it, go do it. We live about 3 hrs. away. I plan on going too. Check out the Asparagus Festival in Stockton too.
