I came across a question that asked which among our neighboring countries should we archetype our "economic model" from. I thought that was a frivolous idea since we are so different from those countries he mentioned in so many aspects. For instance, China, it used to be a communist country, and we were never a communist, so how in the world are you gonna apply Chinese policies in the Philippines. It used to be a 'closed-country' so it's current economic model has a different archetype from ours. Singapore, they had a 1 child policy, what are you gonna do with Filipinos, vasectomize every male species like what they do in India? But we are largely a catholic country which firmly stands for pro-creation. So those philosophies don't apply. I mean, I am not claiming to be all-knowing about politics or economics here but common sense dictates that the idea was such a flip. What do you think??

It's bad enough that we are a very weak and impoverished nation, but stereotyping is not the solution to our problem. We've been imitating cultural and political identities since 1521, can't we have our own identity by now????

A strategy that applies to us, that will answer to our needs.

I think I 've already made my point here, that each country's style of governance depends on their existing situation, considering all the factors like culture, beliefs, idealsms, economics, among others. And now you're talking about national pride?? If it will pacify your babbling mouths, then go ahead and strip us of national pride. Happy? And for filipinos who said that putting aside national pride is worth the progress, what a sucker, for all you know that is the only thing that is left to us. 400 years of imitation didn't get us anywhere, yet still you have that kind of mentality. They say Japan has been the leading country in Asia because of their unsurpassing patriotism. And I think most nations who have that kind of mentality are the ones who been successful. Go ahead, bring out the colonial mentality in you in this time of industrialization, let's see if it will get you anywhere, but I will not succumb to that kind of mentality.

Well:
It was actually you question I was referring to, the thoughtless claim that we should adapt other counries' economic model. And now your answering me with we were never original to begin with?? So what's the point of imitating AGAIN foreign policies?? What is with you? The alternative? The people, a change in their heart and mind, putting some patriotism in it. The politicians, if they could only be less self-serving and corrupt. That's the only change we need! So if you're comfortably sitting somewhere back in America, don't bother shaking our worlds here because it doesn't concern you. Mind about Bush's business in Iraq and you go talk about it til the end of time!

No that's nothing to do with our government. I'm sure there are more brilliant ways on how to improve our country apart from changing the pattern of our government from imitating the other countries.

yes you're correct in saying that every nation is different. that is why some nations develop easily while those who tried to imitate from other nations are still lagging behind. to apply for example the government policies of singapore to that of the philippines would only be absurd.

theories or whatever type of government policies implemented should be based on the existing conditions of a certain nation. ever heard of "kumpletong pagsusuri sa kongretong kalagayan?" one couldn't apply what is not appropriate. do i sound vague? i hope you got what i mean.

No mumbo jumbo from me.
Before copying any other countries policies the Phils needs to have politicians that put the people and country first rather than themselves. Make the politicians accountable for their actions.
The people themselves need to unite and stop voting for actors and sportsmen just because they look or sound good.

The thing is, we can talk until the end of time about how we should not adopt the economic-political methodology of another nation because they're just "different" from us--but what is the alternative?

For the past 61 years, the Philippines thinks that it has gone its own way to implement whatever it considers "its own way". By every metric available now, everyone knows whatever that way was/is, it has failed.

The "I'm differrent and special" mindset seems to be just rationalization on the part of the Filipino powers-that-be to deflect fixing the problem, to not do anything, to maintain the rotting status quo.

Besides, the Philippines since 1946 has implemented a political system that is a mirror image of the US government, so it never had its own way from the onset anyways. That obviously hasn't succeeded. As a side note, the Philippines since the 1970's has been a great consumer and fan of Taiwanese Korean and Japanese goods over its own products, oh the irony.

However, politically in practice, the Philippine government has adopted the Spanish method of governance, which encourages nepotism, favoritism, and other disagreeable practices that destroys nations and its people.

As you can see, the country really hasn't been very original, so to learn and apply the virtues of another country's SUCCESSFUL style is really not out of character for the Filipino.

So let's set the pride aside and just put our heads together and study which of your neighbors methods could be retrofitted into the country--and let's do it with a dedicated heart and mind. Because in the end, we are talking about the future lives and welfare of millions of people here. That is worth giving up a little pride, isn't it?

Update: Gameplan, do not be blinded by your pride. The situation is dire and the lives of millions of pinoys at stake here. This in denial "pride" is the same mindset employed by your leaders, a mindset which has led nowhere in your country's desire to prosper. At this stage in the game, the failure of the Phil government to implement even a semi-successful economic policy warrants very drastic changes in the way you do business with others and yourselves. The Filipinos must follow the economic policy of a successful nation (any nation). that has a proven track record at pulling itself out of dire economic circumstances. A feat done by Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Those guys were in worse shape than the Phils in 1950. Why did they succeed? Why did the Phils fall apart? I argue that is too much pride.

I think is more noble and patriotic for a Filipino to actually implement a practical plan that will truly help the country, more so than it is to mindlessly defend a obviously broken system.

PS: Why do I care about Bush and Iraq? I dont like his policies, but guess what, it doesn't affect me personally. His policies haven't cost me my job and my freedom. besides he'll be out in 2008 and things will return to normal around here.

I'm fine, thank you for the concern.

Watch and learn.

Our nation is lagging behind economically.

What is wrong with studying about what made other countries advance? Absolutely nothing. We can even learn from them.

Sure, we are not exactly like them but we can adopt their system of doing things. If it is for the benefit of the country, is it bad? Will we stick to national pride and remain poor or adopt ways of improving ourselves while maintaining national pride?

The answer is so simple and so obvious.

Maraming salamat, big P.
