I have always found France to be extremely friendly and the people to be great. I think that a lot of people who have posted here are just stereotyping and being prejudiced. English speaking people are just as intolerant of people who don't speak English. A little bit of foreign language ability goes a long way. Brush up on your French and you'll have a great time.
Paris is like any major city, tourists are well catered for. Try some of the other cities like Lyon or Marseille, both great. My favourite smaller place is Chambery in the Alps, totally beautiful.

Well, the French are not very forthcoming to tourists but you probably have the best luck in Paris.

My husband is French. If you try to speak a little French they will be kinder to you than if your do not.

The French are tough people but they can be nice too if you are polite to them and not acting like the "ugly American".

Marseilles is very cosmopolitan now; most of my relatives live there.

French people don't really like tourists. If you don't speak the language, or even a bit, they don't make it easy to get by. Paris is definitley not friendly. I would travel to grenoble or around there. It's much more beautiful and friendly.
