Due to the Doppler effect, loud pipes are loudest AFTER the bike has past, thus negating the rationale. It's just another quaint little sticker they can put on their "helmets" (there's a reason why they used to be called "pudding bowls" and it ain't pretty). Its the sticker next to that one for attracting the chicks, "the ***** fell off". Notice how many of these "outlaws" have brand new leather and $20K bikes. Bad boys? Spare me. Try riding year round in Boston.
I'm 48, riding for 30yrs. British motorcycles have souls and my 20+ yr old leather is just getting broken in. Loud bike riders have serious deficiencies in other pipe regions, you hearin' me, son?

Just like the (Its a Jeep thing... You won't understand).
Its a motorcycle thing too.
Although I do have to agree some are extremely loud and then they sit in every freaking corner and rumble for no reason. I'm about to invest in more loud than the factory ones due to people can't hear me on the freeway (that is very true). But mine should be loud only when throttle is wide open.
But not only motorcycles are loud!!! Some cars in my neighborhood are way loud too. These people fly by little streets and alleys!!! So far I have not seen some one been run over by a motorcycle and I have seen many from cars!

I have screaming eagle pipes on my Harley and I have had the baffles remove. It is loud and it does set off car alarms. I have never noticed it scaring kids, they usually love it and the dogs are not suppose to be on the streets. I do not think the pipes bother people any more than crotch rockets flying through neighborhoods wide open on just the back wheel or racing with one of their friends. To each their own. I have put over 50,000 on the bike I have now so I am not just a weekend rider.

I ride a Harley and I like loud pipes. But I spend the money for pipes that are quiet when I want them to be, but roar real good when I crack the throttle good and hard. I know that if we riders don't take care of this noise issue voluntarily, law enforcement agencies will do it for us.

I always thought that was sort of ironic, since the morons with loud pipes are the ones I wouldn't mind seeing removed from the gene pool.
