Hey, I am Eighteen and soon to leave my Sixth Form and desperately want to see the world...New York, Tokyo, Japan, Australia and Thailand....I have no friends that want to do the same thing so am alone. I was looking into YHA and they are as cheap as £10 a night but you have to share with other people....If I didn't then it would cost me + £40 a night too much....My question is isn't it surely irresponsible and unsafe to share a YHA room with total strangers... I mean too be realsitic they could kill you in your sleep, do awful things....So hwo do people travel abroad cheaply on a gap year with their own rooms?

I still think youth hostels are the way to go. My sister and I traveled around Scotland some years back, staying in youth hostels. For the most part, they were really nice places to stay for the money. The people we met were like us, young people traveling on the cheap. Even if you were with a friend, there's no guarantee you wouldn't have to share a room with others. Be sensible, of course, i.e., don't carry lots of cash or valuables. Put things that might be at risk (like a camera) under your pillow when you sleep. You might find that you'll meet new friends or even hook up with a new traveling companion. Have fun.

Hostels are an overly well means of assembly men and women even as you journey. They are a affordable location to stick however you're going to almost always be in a dormitory of four men and women (even though a few may have as much as 12 men and women). I've stayed in inns, and nonetheless do, and feature had a splendid time. I have a tendency to stick in Hostelling International hostels (of which the English YHA is a member) this present day as you already know what you're going to get - they've a exact set commonplace with a view to be related to HI. I have additionally stayed in a few splendid independants but in addition stayed in a few soiled hostels with unhealthy surroundings - the independants have a tendency to be extra hit or miss than the HI hostels.

Some dorms/youth hostels do have a curfew so that everyone is in .Look at it this way, if someone wud wanna target u to kill u,they cant escape..LoL..Just be careful with ur belongings at all times & have fun! U might make a friend or 2 during ur stay.Cheers!

A lot of people travel alone and stay in hostels. There usually is not any problem. I would not leave anything of real value unattended. I do not think safety is much of an issue from other travelers. As for someone harming you in your sleep it would require a conspiracy as there are usually several people in the room and they are not likely to all be traveling together.
