I like this song a lot. I used to think he was a scientist who knew something like a metoer was 5 minutes away from impacting on the earth, or nuclear missiles were launched 3 and a half minutes ago. Perhaps he tells everyone that he has proof there is a God after all, but that He doesn't care about us. I think that the very idea that something verbal can have such a profound effect on people they are physically affected by it is in itself the point. Like you don't need to know what is actually said at the end of "lost in translation" to make you emote.

I always thought that he told everyone there was no point to existence - and that no matter what you do, nothing will ever change so you might as well stop doing what you're doing and wait for death.
I think that's a pretty safe interpretation considering how happy and hopeful Radiohead's lyrics and music are.

I remember seeing a whole documentary on this. There was never a reason given, and it was intentional. So I suppose left to our imagination....I often thought it was life is too short to be rushing around , lie down smell the earth. And the irony of it being they are all lying on concrete...
It's a very sad video.

He'd heard "Hail To The Chief" and realised how much Radiohead were going to go downhill once they stopped writing tunes.

i think a clue is when the man is lying down and people are concerned at first but then a man comes along and is shouting at him and getting cross instead of trying to help him . Maybe he points out how we treat each other so badly ,instead of being caring and trying to help each other ?
