Why do so many people read novels or watch movies? Why doesn't anyone ever complain about those people? What makes it any different when someone would rather play a game and interact with the storyline and have fun doing so in the process? People enjoy playing games because they either like the storyline or franchise, enjoy doing things they could not do in real life reasonably, entertainment purposes, and to have a good time in their spare time. Games are a lot like books and movies now, they provide a storyline, plot, and characters you can get actually get attached to if the game is created right with a rich story and lively characters. And they are like movies, but instead of watching a ninety or two hour film, you can get from six to hundreds of hours in the same game and be highly entertained by it. Those are just the games that are single player and provide one player storyline experience. The online games is a huge social world where people from all over the world can communicate with someone they would otherwise never of known about if not for playing online games. The only danger I see is those few bad eggs that decide to ignore real life obligations as family, work, and outside world and then blame video games because they have no self control in their own life. Think of all those people who decide to eat fast food everyday and years from now they wonder why they got so fat and then blame the fast food company because they made them fat.

It's a hobby. Other people spend lots of time running, cooking, or reading. Gaming is such an immersive hobby because there are ALWAYS more games to play. I doubt that anyone has played all the video games in the world.
With a hobby like that, why wouldn't a gamer spend lots of time playing games?

Maybe because it's something they enjoy doing in their sparetime. Video games allow the player to go on adventures, solve puzzles, and tons of other fun stuff that could never happen in the real world because the real world is boring. Or just because they're bored....whatever the reason...they're pretty fun.
