Why are some detergent sooo much more expensive than others? It seems Tide continues to get away (in my experience) with almost doubling it's prices compared to generic brands?? What is in Tide that makes it so great? Does it really do a better job at cleaning our clothes or have we been hypnotised in thinking its better because our moms used it?

I just finished reading a report by Consumers Reports on Laundry Detergents. They compared 32 brands and rated each of them. Tide came in 3rd and the average price per load of laundry was 27 cents. Cheer was 4th with a price of 23 per load. SA8 with Bioquest rated 1st but it costs 61 cents per load. The report went on to list other brands and rated them by performance. The least expensive detergents (on a cost per load) did the worst jobs.
Sears and All rated fair and cost only 12 cents per load but did not perform as well as Tide and Cheer.
Hope this helps!

I'm not sure how they get away with raising prices. Everything seems expensive to me so I look for sales and try to buy the cheapest. My guess is that there are formulas for detergent and Tide has hit on a good one for your area. Every area has different water (hard/soft) and everyone has different brands of washing machines they favor. It might be that Tide is not that much more expensive in another part of the country. Generic brands are always cheaper unless there is a sale - then go with what is cheapest.

You pay for what you get. I am a Tide user, and will use nothing else. I have tried numerous others, and find that Tide works the best. It is better at getting stains out and keeping whites whiter. I am very picky about laundry, so if you are not so picky I am sure that the generic brands will be ok for you. They clean ok-but not as well as Tide. Maybe you should just try both and see which one you like the best.

I am 52 years old and used alot of Detergents in my time. I do prefer Tide. It seems like it always gets my clothes cleaner and brighter. It must be doing the same thing for others because thats what makes the cost so high.

I like Tide, the one with 'a touch' of Downy fabric softener in it (lol). I bought some Purex instead one week because they were out of Tide and it took it that long to wreck some of my best clothes! My indigo jeans are now dry rough and faded and the hardware, which was gold, is now rubbing off. the same with shirts, Tide is so much better for the fabric, it keeps it nice and new.

Yes I agree, Tide seems to be the most expensive, but I also believe that it works the best, not to mention that it smells so good (Mountain Spring scent). I have used it for 8 years and refuse to use anything else.

i take advantage of All loose and clean. Any of the dye/physique spray loose detergents are super for mushy little one dermis. Dreft is purely a advertising and marketing ploy to get dad and mom to spend greater. additionally, utilising a detergent like the All potential that i will wash all our outfits jointly and it makes for fewer a lot.

basically you are paying for the name. I don't like using Tide, it doesn't work as well as others.

Have you tried All Small and Mighty?
