Four months max. Throw it out sooner if it starts to smell funky.

The longest you can keep it is 3 months. I usually buy new mascara every 2 months. You can get mascara cheap (Maybelline, CoverGirl) so there is no reason why you should be holding on to an old tube of mascara.

The appropriate recommendation is 2 to 3 months, but if your mascara starts to clump up throw away right away! Eye products are the cosmetics with the shortest expiration time do to the fact that they are more prone to contamination and the consequenses this might cause to your eyes.

I have always been told no more than six months, and if you have been sick and used mascara, replace it. Mascara is a breeding ground for germs. Besides it getting clumpy, it can cause eye infection if you aren't careful. NEVER share mascara with anyone, not even a relative as every one has their own "germs".

2 months is the max.
Also, when applying mascara, never pump the the mascara wand in and out too often as it'll introduce air into it, causing bacteria to breed.
