Whenever I go to grocery stores, I bring two of my own large canvas shopping bags because I don't want to waste the store's plastic bags. I bought the canvas bags at one grocery store but other stores are willing to use them too when I bring them. Many times the stores will only put a few items in those plastic bags and you end up coming out with ten or more plastic bags. I went to a grocery store last night and the cashier wouldn't use the bags that I brought. She just didn't want to move her plastic bags aside and use the ones that I brought so I ended up bagging my own groceries. Was she right? I'm a paying customer and I'm only trying to save the environment. Just don't know if this has happened to someone else and whether I should have complained to the manager. Please let me know so I will know what to do next time.

Yes, of course I can bag my own groceries but if she bags everyone else's and not mine, then don't you think that was unfair. We also have lines for self paying and self bagging for people with few items, if I only a couple of tiems then I would have gone to that line.

Having recently returned from my first visit to the US (I'm Irish) I know exactly what you mean. In Ireland, as is the case throughout much of Europe, plastic bags have government levies to curtail on environmental waste and polution. So every time you go to the grocery store, you bring your own reusable bags or pay 15 cents for a plastic one. I was shocked at the amount of plastic bags used & most stores even put stuff in double plastic bags! Madness!
Shop assistants here gladly help back bags, but like one answer poster observed, customer service is often a thing of the past & unfortunately, it can be all to common when cashiers don't help pack.
Good on you for using the reusable bags though! Keep it up!

I work as a cashier every summer and it is so much easier just to bag them in the bags that cashier has. Stopping to bag them in the bag that a customer wants them in or doing paper and plastic holds the line up. Plus if you wanted them in your bags why didnt you just bag them as she was ringing up your groceries. I am sure she would have gladly allow you to do it. No offense but sometimes people take that I am the customer crap to far. They forget that the people that are working in the grocery store are human beings to. You are making to big a deal of it. Just bag them your self as she is scanning your groceries.
*Edit*-
No I dont think it is unfair that she bagged everyone elses. You were probably the only one that wanted them bagged differently. At the market I used to work at all the customers that bought their own bags in always bagged their own stuff, I dont know why they choose to they just did. I even had customers that would help bag their own stuff as I was bagging, if they had a lot of stuff. Its not unheard of. If you dislike that she wouldnt use your bags and you had to bag your own, go to another store. Actions speak louder than words.

It's supposed to be a part of her job. She's a cashier in a grocery store so it's her job to bag groceries at least in your country. Just because it wasn't her store's bags, doesn't mean she stops doing her job.
I agree with the person above who wrote that customer service is just nonexistent anymore. How sad. Let's all just be rude to each other because everyone else is doing it.
Additional remarks:
I don't see how Neepo13 thinks that it's not unfair that everyone else gets help with their bags and singles someone else not to help. I've seen cashier's bag groceries. Does it take longer time to use someone else's bag vs. the store bag? NO. You put groceries in a bag (simple enough) regardless of type of bag. Really, it was just laziness on the cashier's part and the different bags were just an excuse for her not to do her job.

I use them too and many times cashiers have told me that they feel strange touching them because they are like private property or something, strange. When I see the cashier heading for those plastic bags , I just tell her that I would prefer that she use my bags and they usually go along with it. I wish more people would use their own bags, can you imagine how many of those are in landfills?

She was not right. The customer is right. She should have respected your wishes. Her job is to bag your groceries for you. You should still call the manager even though it has been a little while.

Lady, customer service is non-existent these days. It died somewhere in the late eighties. Pick your battles, getting into a tizzy over plastic bags vs. your canvas bags is a waste of your time and efforts.

Wow, they still bag groceries FOR you? (That's rare where I live). Just bag'em yourself. Keep going to the same cashier. If she's smart, maybe she'll catch on.

You should have complained to the manager. What, they expect us to have different bags for different groceries??

I don't see why it is a big deal. Just bag them yourself. You are a big girl and I believe you can do it on your own. Think about the cashier! He or she has to do two jobs at once. Give them a break. If they weren't rude about it just let it go.
