If your garden has thousands of spiders thriving in it, it's because there is sufficient food to feed thousands of spiders.

If you get rid of the spiders, all of the bugs that the spiders have been feeding will explode in population.

Spiders are strictly predatory, they only eat other bugs. They aren't going to do any damage to your garden itself. The bugs they're feeding on, however, can be a wide variety of pests that may well wipe out your garden if left unchecked.

The spiders are performing a valuable service for you. I would recommend figuring out what you can do to make sure they thrive (i.e. water sources, etc.) rather than trying to get rid of them.

Spider Infestation In Garden

Pretty much everyone is correct in that the spiders will reduce the numbers of pests that will harm your crops so they are beneficial in that respect. If you are absolutely terrified of spiders, like a lot of people are, and can't handle working in a garden with spiders in it then I suggest going to your local home improvement/hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot and getting an insecticide that is specifically used for gardens. Sevendust is a good product and there are others like Spectricide and Bayer, which will kill not only the spiders but the others insects that eat your crop. Just make sure you apply it correctly according to the directions and wash any harvest before eating it. If you don't like using chemicals and like a more organic garden then there are some insecticides that are organic. If you don't like that either then I suggest leaving the spiders alone letting "nature's insecticide" kill off the insects that will harm your garden like the others suggested. Good luck.

Definitely a birdfeeder would reduce the spider population. You didn't mention which kind of spiders.

Are there outside lights that you are running that attract bugs that the spiders are feeding on - try changing white or bluish bulbs with yellow sodium bulbs or 'bug lights'. Are there other sources of bugs such as a compost pile or rotting fruit?

Spiders are generally beneficial and eat lots of bugs, so the most natural and gentle way you can find a balance between your garden enjoyment and the spiders would be good.

Best of luck!

Just to add to the points made above, it is the time of year that spiderlings hatch. This may well be why your garden has such noticeable numbers of spiders. In which case, in a week or two they will have scattered to new territories (many will also have been eaten by birds) and your garden will be back to its usual balance of nature.

If you can bear it, please don't take the option of insecticide. If you do use one, you will also kill other beneficial insects including essential pollinators such as bees.

They eat bugs that harm your plant, so let them be. Once most of the bugs (aka spider food) are gone they will die of starvation or move along. That's nature for you.
