Romanticism was a backlash against the structured artistic and architecture of the Rennaissance and neo-classical world. This backlash also ventured into architecture, and because gothic, in this case neo-gothic, architecture has little set standards for design it was readily accepted by Romaticists who were inspired by romanticism literature.

Gothic style castles are also frequently used in Romantic lit. They immediatly create a certain feel that is necessary in Romanticism.
