You have to remember that things changed during the 19th century, Jane Austen was writing at the beginning, in the Regency period. Films of her books give a good idea of what things were like then. Another good one for that period would be Vanity Fair, if you can find a movie of that. Dickens was more mid century, so films of his books are good for then. Oscar Wilde was writing at the end - an excellent play that has been filmed several times is The Importance of Being Earnest
