I have a pair of black dance/aerobics tights in a box with a bunch of other stuff from my last move, most of which I tossed this past weekend. But these tights appeared to be in good condition except for the mildew odor. So I took a chance and washed them in Arm & Hammer detergent with both oxyclean and colorfast bleach. The tights came out in good condition, except still with a distinct mildew odor. What should I do other than give up and toss them? These are good quality tights, and I know I should have taken better care of them in the first place, but...

Tried the baking soda, didn't quite do it, vinegar next.

Wash them again and add 1/2 cup vinegar to the wash. Vinegar is a deodorizer and it kills mildew. The vinegar smell will dissipate when they dry.

Honestly... I always just get baking soda (or powder, lol) it is the Arm and Hammer orange box, lol. Just put your detergent in your laundry like normal and then add like a half cup of the arm and hammer.
My son was in our garage one time and picked up a gasoline container and some spilled on his pants. I washed them three times and not only did they continue to stink like gas but anything i washed them with did too. My friend told me to use the arm and hammer and in one wash it totally worked and you couldnt tell at all they had gas on them. Then, I left a load in the washer for about a week. I forgot my last load and the next laundry day went in and they all stunk so bad like mold. One wash with the arm and hammer and detergent and they were fine. Just fill the tub with the water first, add the detergent and a&h and close the lid for one second to swish the water and then add your clothes. That way the a&h isnt just poured on top to stay and clump.
This has worked for getting mildew, skunk, gasoline, cigarette smell.... It is a miracle worker on odors.

There a couple of things you can try.
1. Get a box baking soda that is sold as a fridge deodorizer.
Open the box and wrap your tights around it then put the whole thing into a plastic bag for three or four days then, if you can, hang them outside for a few hours.
2. if you have any pure charcoal, not the quick start variety, you can do the same thing as with the baking soda.
Charcoal is a very good deodorizer.

Disolve a box of baking soda in warm water in your sink and soak the tights for 24 hours. Then launder as usual.

Sun will kill mildew but the outside air will help too, hang them on the line in the sun till they loose the smell. If that fails soak them in vinegar, rinse then hang in the sun.

The mixture you described above actually nutralized each chemical.
Soak the garment again in baking soda and regular detergent, set for up to a day, then rinse.

the sun kills of mildew,by hanging them in the sun . also to remove mildew stains you add lemon juice leave to dry in the sun then wash in warm water
