Yes, and they are stylish and gaining popularity in the United States.
The wannabe with the Harley answer is worried more about making you think he has a penis than answering your question.

In a word, yes. Scooters have come a very long way over the years and are now as sophisticated as most motorcycles - (except Harleys). Harleys may be great for "getting chicks" as someone said (assuming that's what you want to do) but the arguement stops there. Harleys have an avid following and that's great for the manufacturer, but they seem to be a social statement as much as anything else.
Scooters on the market today range in size (engine) from 49ccs to 650ccs and, though there are several two strokes still on the market, most are now liquid cooled four stroke engines, with sophisticated continuously variable "automatic" transmissions, and many are fuel injected.
There is a wide range of very high quality, dependable, comfortable, well handling machines avaliable. Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kymco all make at least one large displacement scooter (400 to 650 ccs) and several smaller versions (ranging from 125, 150, and 250ccs). Which ones you should consider depends on what you want it to do for you.
Reliability is largely a matter of manufacturer pride in their product, investment in technology and manufacturing processes. Go with one of the major manufacturers and you won't be faced with reliability problems or the ability to find parts should you need them.
Oh yes, even though I have several scooters, I'm neither a homo or a fat chick.

Ask this question again when gas is up over $3.00 a gallon.

As long as you're not going far, certainly. I wouldn't go cross-country (except in the case mentioned in your other question) but in town, absolutely. I'm more into self-propulsion, but a scooter is a viable option.

if you live in NYC/Washington DC/ or any places that has horrible parking, the answer is YES. A scooter is really helpful if you are overweight too, a lot less walking.
