is there any law about this or can i insist they refund onto a different card or give me cash?

Does the same apply if I pay for something by direct debit? Does that have to be put back into the same account?

Because it is an age old trick to buy something with a stolen credit card - then return it and collect the cash.

Normally, to avoid problems, many establishments with high rates of shoplifting use this means of returning money to avoid cases where somebody shoplifts property and then attempts to return the merchandise for quick cash.

If you used a debit or credit card, the refund will normally go back to that account. Otherwise, many establishments will return the funds via a gift card.

Usually the computer cash registers won't let you take cash out if something was done using a credit card. That is to protect the company from loss. If they don't know it's a different card I bet you could use one. As long as it's card to card and cash to cash.

Debits and Credits a basic accounting entry.
There is no law, however, why should the vendor go to all the trouble of making compound entries and validating your other accounts. It is up to you to accept it back the same way you paid it.
It sounds like you are trying to perfect some kind of kiting scheme. . . moving $$$$ from one account to another and then back etc., to build a big balance
