Most of the time you can not since your period is the disposal of the unused egg and uterun lining. There is not an egg that is ready to be fertilized, and even if there was it would have nothing to implant on since the lining is being shed. Its not that you can conceive while on your period, but sex can result in a baby since sperm can live up to 5 days, and if you ovulate early in your cycle then it can happen.

To be short. Yes.

Look here for more info:

This is a section from the link:
----------
Menstruation is also called menstrual bleeding, menses, or a period. This bleeding serves as a sign that a woman has not become pregnant. (However, this cannot be taken as certainty, as sometimes there is some bleeding in early pregnancy.) During the reproductive years, failure to menstruate may provide the first indication to a woman that she may have become pregnant. A woman might say that her "period is late" when an expected menstruation has not started and she might have become pregnant.

Yes. You can get pregnant while on your period.

Timing of ovulation is not written in stone. If your ovulation date changes from time to time, you can have a period and ovulate at some time close to that which would allow you to get pregnant.

The only way to avoid pregnancy is to use at least two methods of contraception--or avoid sex.

Period.
