We have no hot water, but not see a leak coming from our water heater? I'm clueless on this and need some advice on what could be wrong?

Thank you.

It's an electric water heater.

Could be several things. The water is turned off to the hot water heater (usually a valve on the top of the water heater). The heater is not being heated -they can be gas or electric. If gas the pilot light could be out, or gas supply could be shut off stopping the heating. You said no heat, not low heat, so those are the most likely. If electric, it is possible that the circuit is off for the heater, or it has become unplugged.

You are dealing with water, electricity, and explosive gas potentially - so if you are not sure, call an authorized technician or handy neighbor for help.

At the bottom of the hot water heater there is a place where lines go in from the thermostat. This door can be lifted or squeezed together so you can access the interior. This is where your pilot light is. It sounds like your pilot light may be out. Otherwise the gas nipple may need changing. If the pilot light is burning. Check this first and see if there is a small flame there. But if it's a electric water heater the heating element may be out. Sometimes it's easier to buy a new water heater than try to replace the old. But if electric check to see if it has tripped a circut breaker or not.

We need to know if it is a gas heater or electric! If it is gas, the thermocouple could have gone out, thus the pilot light goes out, and shuts off the control valve gas supply. If it is electric, several possibilities come to mind. If you have thoroughly checked the exterior, and found no leaks, then whatever the problem is, will not require a new heater, and should be able to be fixed, for a reasonable price. Good luck to you!
