I just bought something online that I should have already electronically received and the "customer support" keeps giving me the run around. The webpage looks legit, but how can I make sure?

Here are the steps, so do this BEFORE buying.

1 - have you ever heard of them before? Staples, Amazon, Costco, Wal-Mart... those are names that you heard of before, so you can buy from them without a problem.

2 - check the ABOUT page. Do they really identify themselves? IF NOT, close the window.

3 - Look up the owner of the Domain Name - use a WHOIS thing like http://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois
If this DOES NOT MATCH the ABOUT page, then CLOSE that Window

4 - Check that domain name and/or company at the Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org
If there are complains, that is where to LOOK. If you find any, then CLOSE that Window

You could also check the Better Business Bureau's website for any complaints against them. www.bbb.org Or, if they keep giving you the run-around, file a complaint. The thing is, if they're not legit, the BBB will have no effect on them because they're probably a fly-by-night and don't care.

You can check who owns the site via http://www.internic.org/whois.html for starters, then based on where they are and if its a legitimate business name you can check with the local Better Business Bureau for that area.

To check any website, you should download McAfee's Site Advisor which tells you (via green, amber and red lights) which are good sites and which are not. Get it from here >> http://www.siteadvisor.com/
