i think straight men fear that gays are going to come on to them. Straight people have expressed that fear to me, Fear can lead to hatred.
There's also centuries of religious hatred. A new survey says that 80% of straights interviewed don't hate gays!

Look at the word homophobia. it is not hate, it is fear manifested by violence. People fear things that they don't understand or that are different. The same question could be asked: why do people hate blacks? Jews? Asians? Latinos? Muslims?
Fear is a horrid thing, and people try to destroy the things that make them afraid.
