I am doing a research paper on stereotypes and I keep finding that many stereotypes are true. For example: asians are bad drivers, jews are good with money, french people stink, white people who live in trailers are "trashy", black guys like fat white chicks, etc. So do we call these things stereotypes because we want to dismiss them as racists? my grandma always said; "if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck..."

They are true -- we didn't get stereotypes by making things up but not they are still insulting to those who don't fit it.

Truth is truth. We hold on to the stereotypes that make ourselves a better distinction than the rest, which can be false. If you've got something derogative to say about everyone else, then giving yourself a pat on the back is only suitable, because you're not like the rest of the lesser people(sarcasm).
Just watch out for the day that all of the stereotypes set you up for failure. When all of your beliefs crash down on you, the very moment you are wrong. It can be a good thing though. Just depends. For me, I was reminded of how wrong I was by an angel. I had my opinions about black people, which I still do occasionally, but it was a black chick that made me think different.
If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it still could be a goose. Tell your grandma.

A stereotype, by it's very nature is a generalization. If you consider it a generalization, then you could find some that are, in general, true. It's the application of the general to the specific where most get into trouble.

Does ALL asians drive bad? Are ALL Jews good with money? Do ALL French people stink? Etc........If the entire race isn't exactly the same...then yes it is a stereotype!!!

Those are stereotypes because it does not count for all people in those races. I get to know people on an individual base not by what I heard because it is the intelligent thing to do.

That was a not very good job of disguising your racism.

Either that, or you are not terribly observant. Not all, or most, of every group you just listed is as you listed it.

That fact, alone, belies your blanket statement that it is "true" and since they are derogatory, they are stereotypes and harmful.
