There are loads of theories on this (trust me, I've got a masters in HR!) but the basics that everyone seems to agree on are:-
- A happy workforce is more productive
- People are more productive when they feel valued and recognised for their efforts - that doesn't have to be finacially
- A diverse workforce is more productive
- People are more productive when they have variety in their roles
- People are more productive when they are given responsibility and have some pressure applied (but too much pressure has the opposite effect)
I hope that helps!

Is this personal productivity or the 'team'?
Assuming there is actually a problem to solve (i.e. a bottleneck or backlog somewhere) the first thing to do is identify the aim of the task/s involved. Then the number of different actions and people involved.
Next analyse what causes the blockage/delay and understand from a practical level(not emotional level) what the problem is. If it is an individual don't de-humanise the issue but don't make the person the issue either.. It will only delay the solution. If an individual has to go then what is required of them as a reasonable work rate will expose this.
To cut this to a reasonable length you are trying to create is a 'flow' system, most offices work with a 'push' type structure where people try to get it off their desk onto the next work station. The best system is a 'pull' system where the last person in the chain is asking for more work.

Be specific next time. and people read the questions. It is productivity not production !!!!
Whwn I am really lagging back on my work. I do the following.
When I come to work first thing i do when I reach my desk is I create a To Do List for the day, within no more then 5 minutes.
Takes another 5 minutes to prioritize the list.
And also the to do list shoudent have stuff like. Eat lunch, get coffey, get paper stuff like that.
Also once when task is done I strike it out.
and when i strike it out I just glance over my list to see what next. The next thing you do should not necessarly be the next thing on your list. If you fell some thing else should be done first. or your bored doing certain tasks. you might wana pick a fun task just to keep you interested. Or just take a break if you need one. Dont push it unless you really need to.
At the end of the day or the next day you will allways find time to fool around a little bit.
Hope It Helps.
I would like to know though what seem to be the problem.

I guess it would depend on the task. I work in the construction trade, and the best way that we increase productivity is job preparation. Have your work space clean and clutter free. have your needed materials nearby and set up to be used as needed. As the project continues constantly remove the discarded materials so that they do not become clutter. As the project starts to wind down start planning for the next one. Good luck!

get the people you employed for the job doing the job their trained to do
for example i was a computer and printer engineeer working in a workshop
but spent over a third of my time chasing parts ordering parts finding stock updating a computer system
helping field engineers on the phone doing my own paperwork assisting other engineers with faults
then getting it in the neck for not having as many jobs done as the others each day
i used to get so pissed off as i could see what i was doing and contributing each day but the bloody accountant could only see output figures they couldnt see what went on behind the scenes to keep things going day to day
i feel this goes on alot as people are mulltitasking in their jobs for little appreciation
i had enough and went self employed
This is a prime example of how to fall out with your workforce
and loose good trained staff.
so treat your staff as you would like to be treated yourself
a little bit of humour a day can make the workplace an enjoyable experience
get your workers doing what they are trained for chasing stock etc should be anothers job
constant pressure will be detrimentle to service/quality and moral
recognise peoples talents and use them wisely
how many times have you heard
we must improve output but quality must not suffer
I ask this
can an accountant add up figures on a computer any faster than he can input them on a keyboard?
how will he increase his output?
so why should they expect us to go any faster than we are already doing so ..... only by cutting corners
i would like to see what happens if he left off some figures from his calculations
so why do they expect us to
we all need a little presure or we will get lazy
but dont kick a man when hes doing his best or he will eventually kick back
what im getting at is get to know your workers and what they can do dont just rely on percentages and figures as they dont show the real picture of whats going on..

Make sure the staff are trained and that will give them confidence- which will in turn lead them to greater productivity and motivate them to do well. Also praise staff and make them aware of targets so they feel part of the organisation and have a target to work towards- it will make work more interesting for them.

Work harder for longer for less pay.
Your boss will think he's wonderful and you're stupid.
Then again......isn't that the way things are?
Capitalism at work.......isn't it wonderful?
