Is it really caused by stress ? My loach does it every once in a while for no reason at all. i have had him for a month and he acts perfectly healthy and happy. he has his hiding spots, swims around, eats regularly, has no problems with his community tankmates....

Is greying out a warning sign of being unhealthy or is it just something they do ?

Thanks!

Since you have had him a month and this is the only thing you have noticed, it's highly unlikely you are dealing with any type of disease. Personally I would rule that out entirely. They can change color a bit in response to other fish in the tank, lighting, activity around the tank... tons of basically harmless reasons. You might be able to watch him enough to figure out what he's responding to, but no doubt at all it will be a harmless stimulus.

I do believe it is caused by stress or sickness. I have never been able to keep many bottom feeders in my tank. I think my snails out compete them for food.
