I'm 6 months pregnant and barely showing. I need a job really bad to buy some of the things we still need for the baby and to pay off some of our debt. I'm pretty sure that I know how I'll handle it (not tell) but I just want to know what your opinions are? I am in Canada and I already know that I have no legal obligation to tell and that they can't fire me once they find out because that would be against the law. The best supporting comment for my case that I have heard is basically not to tell and when they ask/find out to say that it never came up. I'm not applying for anything great, just a job at a fast food restaurant. Any other advice would be appreciated!

I went for a couple job interviews back in January where I chose to tell that I was pregnant, and they told me some completely bogus reason for why I didn't get the job. This is where I am basing my new opinion. I am a damn hard worker, and any company should be glad to have me even if it is for only 3 months!

You are right - they can't ask, you should not tell. Employers are not supposed to discriminate against a pregnant women, but many of them do anyway - they just won't tell you what the real reason is that you didn't get the job.

They may feel betrayed when you start to really show in a month or two, but with the turnover at fast food restaurants, they should be happy to get three months out of you.

Take care of your baby, and good luck.

I also am Canadian and worked in the bar and restaurant industry for over 30 years. It doesn't matter whether you tell them or not, once you are over 4 months, they cannot insure you, so they have the right to not hire you or dismiss you once they find out. This does not apply to retail and other jobs, but in the food industry it definately does. If you should slip and fall, they would not be able to cover you for compensation or insurance of any kind.
You would maybe get away with it for a little while, but as soon as they found out you were pregnant, they would have to let you go.
There are other jobs you could get that would pay more and allow you to work while pregnant.
I actually had to deal with this dilemma many times as a manager because we were liable for the worker and we just couldn't take that risk.
If you are outgoing and a people person, you might want to consider starting a home business. This is something that can earn you a great deal more income, and you can do it after the baby is born, while building residual income. In the long run, you would be far better off.
