Shelia was awake for 3/4 of the day. She spent 1/4 of the time awake studying in school and 1/6 of the time awake studying at home. What fraction of the day did Shelia spend studying in school and at home?

(Is the fraction of the day same as the fraction for time being awake?)

My working is below: (Is it correct?)

3/4 of day awake

1/4 of time awake in school =1/4 X 3/4
= 3/16
1/6 of time awake at home = 1/6 X 3/4
=1/8

Total time spent = 3/16 + 1/8 = 5/16

Thanks

If she was awake for 3/4 of the day, she was awake for 18 hours. She spent 1/4 of 18 hours studying in school (4.5 hours) and 1/6 of 18 hours studying at home (3 hours). This gives you a total of 7.5 hours of studying during the day.
The fraction of the day that Shelia spent studying at school is 3/16.
The fraction of the day that Shelia spent studying at home is 1/8.
The fraction of the day that Shelia spent studying total is 7.5/24 or reduced to 5/16.

3/4 of day awake = 18 hours
1/4 of 18 hours = 4.5 hours
1/6 of 18 hours = 3 hours

Total time studying = 7.5 hours
7.5 / 24 is the fraction of the day spent studying. or , as the poster above correctly points out, 5 / 16.

I added the 1/4 and 1/6 since she was awake studying in school and home for this amount of time.

1/4 + 1/6 = 6/12 = 1/2

And you get 1/2.

But I've been done with fractions in school for over 5 years now, so I'm not positive.

Time awake in school :1/4
Time awake at home: 1/6

Total time spent studying = 1/4 +1/6
L C M = 12

1/4 x12 +1/6 x 12=

Simplify it you will get : 5/12
Thats the answer :)
