No one has the same style as the dead, but here are bands I think you may like, if you like the dead:

String Cheese Incident
The Recipe
Moe.
Phish
Keller Williams
Karl Densons Tiny Universe
Galactic
Dark Star Orchestra
Phil Lesh and Friends
Disco Biscuits
Yonder Mountain String Band
Ekoostic Hookah

I have seen all of these bands numerous times, and I loved them all. These are some of the best jam bands around. Listen to them all, see them all!!! I am sure you will like @ least one of them!!!!

I think the Dead are the best and no other band that is remotely similar can touch them. The answers, so far, are the best of the similar bands, BUT...

The music is different, but the adventurous and spontaneous approach to music is what makes jazz masters what they are. The best albums to get started are:

Roland Kirk-The Inflated Tear (1967). This cassette was on the Further bus of Ken Keasy and the Merry Pranksters.

Wayne Shorter-The All Seeing Eye, Juju, and Speak No Evil. All great albums

John Coltrane-the Complete Africa/Brass Sessions. The great Eric Dolphy plays on that album. Most any album with Dolphy is great.

Bobby Hutcherson-Dialogue. Vibraphone player with great songs and band.

Charles Mingus-The Great Concert of Charles Mingus. Another great album with Dolphy. Phil Lesh mentions Mingus in his book (Mingus plays bass). The music played here is undescribable.

Ornette Coleman-Change of The Century. Ornettte was a total original. He played with the Dead in Febuary 1993. The chemisty was really grerat.

There's a lot of great jazz albums that were created around 1962-1967 (like the ones I have listed above), this was a very adventurous and creative time for music. I'm sure the Dead were inspired by the music from this time.

John Ellis is a young current musician who has great albums and is even better live.

If you take my advice, I can suggest more, just send a message.

Can't stand them; they inspired people to be useless potheads; All the Grateful Dead who are left, and their fans, should die.
